Struggles and Sacrifices of a Breadwinner
A FEATURE STORY
For many generations, being a breadwinner in the family has become a cultural expectation in our society. For many, being able to provide for your family is both pride and satisfaction. An honor and a 'hands down' endeavor. But sometimes, if not always, being a breadwinner comes with a lot of sacrifices. Witness how Michelle Abejuela navigates her life as a breadwinner of her family.
Michelle, 20 years old, is born and raised in Cagayan de Oro City, and has been working since time immemorial. She, as a student, was bright and hardworking, and has a huge dream of becoming a psychologist. She had her whole life planned ahead of her. But when her father lost his job due to an ailment and her mother was the only one left to take care of the family, her life took a different route. She assumed the role of being the sole provider of the family.
Michelle worked real hard to provide financial support to her family. A large chunk of responsibility fell on her shoulders. She was juggling work and school.
Being the sole provider, at the same time being a student, she simultaneously had to balance her work and studies. Admittedly, she was struggling to do so, as she worked tirelessly, she barely gets free time for herself. A lot of her needs were overlooked. When she finished her first year in college, she then decided to sacrifice her studies and dreams, to primarily focus on her job.
Despite everything, Michelle still wants to follow what her heart really wants. She is still eager to pursue her academic endeavors and reach her dreams. Right now, she continues to work hard to save a large sum of money for her studies.
Michelle's story is a great example how circumstances can change and shape your life. One moment you know what is happening, the next it is unpredictable. Even so, in times like this, it is essential to see life in a positive light. Through a lens full of optimism. That way, although you are thrown with so much responsibilities, you can still manage to navigate and swim right through it.
